The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage curriculum begins when children reach the age of three. Most of the children who attend St Colette’s have had some form of pre-school experience soon after their third birthday, with some through our own nursery class. Children joining the school in reception are part of this Foundation Stage. During the first year, we focus on the Early Years Foundation Stage learning goals, developing our children in the following six areas:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

Throughout the year, there will be a balance between the six areas. Emphasis is placed on personal, social and emotional development during the first part of the year.
The Foundation Stage prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 and provides an excellent start for the curriculum that follows.
